The preliminary hearing began Monday for one of the accused in Tiki Laverdiere’s homicide investigation.

Jesse Sangster, 24, who is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle, was scheduled to appear for the three-week preliminary hearing from Sept. 28 for three weeks at North Battleford Provincial Court.

During the preliminary inquiry the judge will determine if there is sufficient evidence for trial.

No details of the hearing can be made public due to a court-ordered ban.

Due to COVID-19 regulations about social distancing and capacity restrictions, only a limited number of people are permitted inside the courtroom.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford May 1, 2019. Human remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford on July 11, 2019 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16, 2019.

Outside the courthouse Monday, Tiki’s mother Carol Laverdiere joined a group of family supporters.

Tiki Laverdiere’s family spokesperson Krista Fox said it’s stressful for the family attending the hearing.

“They literally had to pack up their home and move here for the next three weeks. So I can only imagine that would be a little overwhelming,” she said. “[Carol] does have a lot of local support.”

The family of missing North Battleford woman Ashley Morin were also present to show their support.

Fox said there is an online auction through the Auction for Ashley Facebook page to offer support for Tiki’s family. As of Monday morning there were 25 donations made to raise some funds to help the family during their stay in North Battleford for the hearing.
