Most Town of Battleford council members running for re-election

Sep 22, 2020 | 1:41 PM

The majority of the Town of Battleford council members are planning to enter the race for the upcoming municipal election in an attempt to retain their seats.

Mayor Ames Leslie announced Sunday he plans to run for re-election for the mayoral position.

During Monday night’s council meeting, councillors Shelley Boutin-Gervais, Doug Laing, Gordon Yarde, Kevin Russell and Judy Pruden confirmed they would be in the race in an effort to hold onto their seats on council.

Yarde has served on council off and on for 27 years so far, and said he wants to keep on going.

Coun. Susan McLean Tady is the only council member who said she would not seek re-election.

“I will not be putting in my papers. It’s time for me to retire from council,” she said. “I wish you guys all the best. I’m really proud you guys are going forward. Good luck to you all.”

Leslie thanked McLean Tady for her long service of a dozen years on council.

“You leave a legacy behind you,” he said. “Many of the citizens appreciate what you have done over these last 12 years. You have been a mentor to me — as my time as councillor as well as mayor. I really appreciate all the time you have put forward for the town.”

Information is available on the town’s website for anyone interested in running for council.

The nomination period runs from Sept. 22 to Oct. 7. Election Day is scheduled for Nov. 9.
