No one injured in North Battleford house fire yesterday

A neighbour was the first to alert the fire department of a house fire on the 1400 block of 107 Street in North Battleford yesterday afternoon.

Annie Laing said the owner’s son was visiting her family when he suddenly noticed the smoke.

“He came running in and said: ‘Our house is on fire! Our house is on fire!’ she said. “So I ran in, and I have the alarm system so I hit the fire button.”

Laing said she also called 911 right away, and firefighters were at the scene within a couple of minutes.

Laing said she is glad everyone was safe.

No one was inside the home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries.

North Battleford Fire Chief Lindsay Holm said crews spent close to three hours at the scene.

“We were able to control the fire quite quickly, but it took us a considerable amount of time to overhaul the home to make sure we are not going to have a rekindle in there,” he said. “The home had sawdust insulation in it. So we had to spend a considerable amount of time pulling down the ceiling to make sure that the fire was completely extinguished.”

Fourteen firefighters helped extinguish the flames.

“I haven’t really gone in to do a damage assessment yet but there was a considerable amount of fire on the second storey of the home,” Holm said.

The cause of the fire is still being determined.
