Household Hazardous Waste Day upcoming this month

Fall cleaning is on the horizon for North Battleford residents. Later this month, the city will hold its semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Day.

Taking place Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Public Works Shop on 6th Ave., the program is open to North Battleford residents only and no commercial loads will be accepted.

People can drop off a range of acceptable products, including common household cleaners such as adhesives, aerosols, automotive cleaners, fuels, mercury, oxidizers, poisons, and solvents.

This month’s event will mark the second hazardous waste day in the city this year. Much like when the event was held earlier, in the spring, there will be special COVID-19 precautions to ensure the health and safety of all while interacting during the drop-off process.

Residents participating in the event must remain in their vehicles for the duration of the drop-off and are asked to not attend if feeling sick. Staff will then remove the household hazardous materials from the trunk of the car/truck bed.

Dustin MacDonald, the communications administrator with the city, said they found the process went very smoothly when they held the event in the spring.

“People were really good about following the procedure to enter the grounds and have people remove the hazardous waste materials from their vehicle,” he said.

Those dropping off are asked to bring all hazardous materials in their original containers with labels intact if possible. Residents are also explicitly told not to mix products.

“You run the risk of creating noxious gasses or potential chemical reactions that could be harmful to yourself in your vehicle, or the people who would be removing these hazardous materials,” MacDonald said.
