Nominations sought for prestigious provincial recognitions

Residents in the Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan regions are being called on to recognize the people in their lives and in their communities, who work to make a difference.

Nominations are now open for both the 2020 Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal, and the province’s highest honour, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

Jason Quilliam, chief of protocol with the Government of Saskatchewan, explained that volunteers have always played a critical role in the province.

“The spirit of volunteerism in this province goes back to our roots. Back when we first became a province 115 years ago, things weren’t happening unless it happened in a group,” Quilliam said. “It’s important that continues, and this is one way of highlighting the people who continue to do that 115 years after we became a province.”

The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal is in it’s 25th year, established in 1995 as a means to formally recognize the selfless devotion of the province’s volunteers, and as a way to present role models to Saskatchewan citizens.

“We certainly encourage folks in Prince Albert and all through the north to look for that one person that they’re familiar with who really keep the lights on, and making sure that their organization keeps going,” Quilliam noted.

Nominations are being accepted until Oct. 18, and require between three and six letters from references who know the nominee and can talk about their contributions.

The government is also accepting applications for the province’s highest honour, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

Also in it’s 25th year, the Order of Merit recognizes excellence, achievement, and contributions to the cultural, social and economic well-being of the province.

“Whether it’s the arts, agriculture, business and industry, community leadership…it runs the gamut,” Quilliam said. “It’s the province’s way to recognize people in this province who over a significant period of time have just done some amazing things and contributed to the fabric of the society.”

Nominations for the next group of Order of Merit recipients will be accepted until Nov. 1.

All nominations for both the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit can be accessed online.
