Deadline to pay city 2020 property taxes now end of September

North Battleford residents will soon receive their new tax notices.

The deadline to pay 2020 taxes without penalty this year will be Wednesday, September 30.

Mayor Ryan Bater said the city changed the due date to give people more time to pay their taxes as a result of the financial impact of COVID-19.

“Typically they are due earlier,” he said. “We extended that at the beginning of the pandemic.”

People can pay their taxes by mail, online, at their financial institution or at city hall.

As expected, there will be a 2.9 per cent municipal tax increase for 2020.

“It’s a very modest increase,” Bater said. “We’re just of course staying consistent with our budget decisions from last fall.”

Based on city finance director Steve Brown’s recent report, the Uniform Mill Rate for 2020 property taxes is set at 13.879.

The residential base tax will increase to $733 from $712.34 which equals a $20.66 increase. The average mill rate for residential properties will increase to 5.527 from 5.37, which on a $100,000 assessed property is $15.60.

The total increase for a $100,000 assessed property in 2020 is $36.26.

The actual tax increase will depend on the property’s assessment value.

The mill rate is one factor, in conjunction with property prices, to calculate a homeowner’s taxes. A municipality will modify the mill rate depending on the amount of revenue it needs to raise.
