Tenth suspect charged in Tiki Laverdiere homicide

A tenth suspect has been arrested and is facing charges connected to the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation.

Samuel Takakenew, 36, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder. He was arrested under a Canada-wide warrant on Aug. 26 by the Edmonton Police Service.

He is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

Police report, the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Unit (MCU)-North has been investigating the homicide of Tiki Laverdiere and have continued to follow up on all information and tips since July 2019.

To date, 10 people have been charged and are before the courts or have been sentenced for their roles in her death.

Takakenew is the son of Mavis Quinn Takakenew who pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in February 2020. She was sentenced on May 15 to an 18-month jail sentence.

Co-accused Brent Checkosis pleaded guilty to his charge and received seven years in prison for accessory after the fact to murder on May 15.

The remaining suspects include Charles St. Savard who is facing a charge of first-degree murder. St. Savard who is in custody will return to North Battleford Provincial Court Sept. 18.

Nikita Sandra Cook is charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. She is scheduled to stand trial at Battleford Queen’s Bench Court next year, on Jan. 11, 2021.

Nicole Cook, Jesse Sangster, Soaring Eagle Whitstone, Danita Thomas and Shayla Orthner are facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford on May 1, 2019. Human remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford on July 11, 2019 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16, 2019.
