Lloyd Twins top Beavers to claim NSRBL title

Aug 18, 2020 | 1:00 PM

The Lloyd Twins claimed their 12th league championship in franchise history Monday night in North Battleford, topping the North Battleford Beavers 6-2 at Beaver Lions Stadium.

The championship serves as the Twins’ seventh in the last 11 years, and first since a run of six straight from 2009-2014. It completes a fairytale season that saw the team lose just a single game this summer, on their way to recapturing glory.

Jon Hines with the Twins, said while the team may have taken their best-of-three championship series with the Beavers in two straight games, the club has nothing but respect for the grit and tenacity shown by their opposition at the other end.

“We played a lot of quality ball clubs throughout the season, and kudos to North Battleford; they were two tough games to win, and we were just happy to pull it out and get the trophy back,” Hines said.

Hines, who joined the Twins after his previous team folded a few seasons ago, said he’s happy to be part of a winning organization with such a great group of guys.

“The Twins just seem like a classy organization, they have a winning culture and they try and play the game the right way,” he said. “I think there’s just a lot of respect for the game on this team and it’s huge [to reclaim the championship]. We had a few years where we had to battle to get it back and now we’ve got it,” he said with a smile.

For the Beavers, who made their first finals appearance since the team’s last championship run in 1997, the loss was understandably a heartbreaker.

However, head coach and player with the Beavers, Kyle Gregoire, said he is proud of the team for leaving it all out there on the field on a memorable run.

“We came together and made it to the finals, and it had been a long time for a Beavers’ team to make it there, so we’re extremely proud of how the guys played this year,” Gregoire said. “A victory would have been sweeter but we fell just short.”

League MVPs Honoured

Prior to the start of Game 2, Braden Polreis of the Unity Cardinals, and Cooper Olson of Standard Hill were awarded West Division (Polreis), and East Division (Olson) Most Valuable Player honours for the 2020 NSRBL season.

Polreis finished the season with the best batting average in the league amongst players with at least seven games played (.520); while Cooper posted a perfect 4-0 record on the mound, while pitching 19 strikeouts and a .00 earned run average.
