City’s asphalt patchwork, infrastructure work on schedule

Aug 5, 2020 | 10:22 AM

Battlefords residents can expect a few minor delays for local traffic this week as the city attends to several construction and repair projects.

The city announced residents can expect full or partial street closures from August 4 to 9 at various locations requiring asphalt patchwork. K&S Asphalt Services staff will fix several potholes within the city. City Operations Director Stewart Schafer said it should be a quick job.

Anything more extreme than patchwork, such as curb and sidewalk repair, will be carried out later this month. Schafer said the city is on track to meet its goals for infrastructure work this year, despite early rain delays and the initial shutdown of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re actually quite surprised,” he said. “Pleasantly surprised that we can still get everything done.”

Asphalt work will continue throughout the week between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

It’s hoped the UPAR work on 100th Street also continues on schedule. Planning and Development Director Jennifer Niesink said getting plenty of clear skies over the past two weeks was critical.

“It’s moving along. [The] weather has been cooperative so far,” she said.

Niesink said securing a local contract was a priority for the city this summer.

“We might as well stay on top of infrastructure and replace things before they become problematic,” she said.
