Town mosquito spraying postponed to Wednesday, weather permitting

The Town of Battleford is postponing its mosquito spraying originally planned for tonight.

The municipality announced the process was not able to move ahead as planned due to the windy weather conditions.

Fogging will now take place on Wednesday evening instead, weather permitting.

“Environment Canada is not showing any reduction in the wind so we are going to have to postpone until tomorrow,” Mayor Ames Leslie said. “The wind is supposed to die down by tomorrow evening. Just in case, everyone should keep an eye on the [town’s] web page as well as the Facebook page.”

When fogging does proceed the process will start at about 10 p.m.

Leslie said for suitable weather for spraying there needs to be minimal wind and the temperature must be relatively mild, with a minimum of 13 C.

The town sprays in the night time since this is when the mosquitoes are most active. At this time other insects such as bees are most inactive so there is less risk of harming them.

To reduce exposure during fogging, people are advised to stay indoors during the process and for at least one hour after. They are asked to close all windows, turn off air-conditioning units, cover swimming pools and keep pets indoors. After fogging is complete, it is recommended residents wash outdoor toys and garden vegetables. Any Battleford residents wishing to opt out of fogging needed to do so before 5 p.m. that day.
