Alberta/Sask RCMP arrest three suspects in rash of carjackings with shots fired

Jul 31, 2020 | 5:33 PM

Three suspects have been arrested and charged with 47 offences, following collaboration between multiple RCMP detachments in Alberta and Saskatchewan. This followed the RCMP’s request for public assistance in locating a stolen Ford F-150 on June 29.

Around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening, Onion Lake RCMP responded to a report of a male victim from a firearm use injury, where the suspects fled the scene. The victim was transported to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Pursuit of the vehicle near Lloydminster was initially called off for safety reasons.

While patrolling at approximately 6 p.m. police heard the suspects’ vehicle collided with another on 46 Avenue in Lloydminster. Allegedly, two of the suspects brandished a firearm and attempted to steal a truck, before running off. A few minutes later, the suspects attempted another carjacking, resulting in two shots at a victim while they were in their car before being able to drive away and to safety.

The suspects then assaulted another victim and stole their truck, which was located east of Lloydminster. Responding officers initiated pursuit, but it was terminated due to public safety, as the truck veered into the westbound lanes on Highway 16 and into oncoming traffic.

Less than an hour later, Maidstone RCMP received a report of another truck being stolen near Highway 16 and Highway junction 303, which was later recovered back in Lloydminster. A female suspect was arrested in the area.

Around 7:30 p.m., there was another report of a truck carrying two males stuck near Hillmond. The males fled the scene before police arrived, but were later arrested while walking on a road nearby.

The two male suspects, Lucas Aaron Oakes (24) of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, and Jesse Leigh Heathen (33) of Lloydminster, were jointly charged with 14 Criminal Code offences, including: theft, robbery using a firearm, assault, uttering threats and flight from police.

Heathen was individually charged with seven additional offences, while Oakes was individually charged with 15 additional offences along with seven offences from the Onion Lake shooting.

The female suspect, Montana Horse (21) of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a controlled substance and twice failing to comply. She was also wanted by police at the time of her arrest.

The three accused appeared for a judicial hearing and will be appearing in North Battleford Provincial Court on Aug. 4. No further information is available.

As this matter is now before the courts not further information is available.
