Co-op donates $121,000 for Radisson community park enhancements

As the economic effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continue to be felt in communities across the province, one business is making a big difference for the town of Radisson, Sask.

This year Co-op is providing $121,000 to upgrade recreation facilities in Radisson that will include improvements to an outdoor pool, hockey rink and local baseball diamonds.

Vice-President of Radisson Recreation Association, Linda Hosegood, said the town is very grateful for the donation and looking forward to the upgrades the funding will allow the community to pursue.

“We are just over the moon, just so ecstatic,” she said. “It means we can finish the projects we started a couple of years ago, and also do our heating project that is putting a boiler system into our skating rink. That’s something the swimming pool can use in the summer and the skating rink in the winter.”

Hosegood said especially with the ongoing pandemic, the funding provides the community with something they can look forward to and have hope about.

“It’s just nice to have the positivity and the excitement for everybody to really look forward to something that’s really, really nice to happen to them,” she said.

The funding is part of a larger project known as Co-op Community Spaces, which was developed to help protect, beautify and improve spaces across Western Canada. In 2020 the program is providing $1 million to 17 community projects from Vancouver Island to Manitoba.

Since 2015, Co-op has donated $9.5 million to 132 projects.

Marketing and Communications Manager with the Discovery Co-op in North Battleford, Leanne Ducommun, echoed the excitement from Co-op’s end, saying organizers are happy to be a part of helping communities like Radisson in their local developments.

“To have these types of improvements to their pool and their rink and their diamonds; this is essentially the heart of what every small community is made of,” she said. “For the town of Radisson and the Discovery Co-op this was just a really wonderful win and great announcement we’re very proud of.”
