The Battlefords North Stars have traded goaltender, Adam Dmyterko to the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) for a player development fee (PDF).

Following a five game stint with the North Stars in 2018-19 that saw the Saskatoon product post a .920 save percentage, Dmyterko took his game to the next level last season, in his first full year with the Stars.

Playing a team-high 23 games in 2019-20, Dmyterko posted a 15-4-1 record, along with a 2.51 goals-against average and .922 save percentage.

For Dmyterko, the trade is a bit of a bitter-sweet feeling. While he will likely see considerably more playing time with the Canucks, the netminder said he will definitely look back fondly on his time within the North Stars’ organization.

“The team, the coaching and the fans are amazing in the Battlefords,” Dmyterko said. “In the community, my billets were unreal. It was just a good time in general and probably my best years playing hockey were in the Battlefords. We have it pretty good there as players and hockey’s awesome there, so I wouldn’t trade that for [anything].”

Heading into his final year of junior hockey eligibility, Dmyterko joins a young and hungry Calgary team, eager to get back on top following a rebuilding year last season. It is a challenge the 20-year-old is looking forward to.

“I’m kind of excited now, I’m going to miss the guys and miss playing in the Battlefords, but I’m excited for a new start,” he said. “I’m going to have a pretty good opportunity there so I’m happy to be a part of that.”

Head coach of the North Stars, Brayden Klimosko, said he wishes Dmyterko nothing but the best, after playing a pivotal role in the team’s recent success over the last couple of seasons.

“Adam was a warrior throughout his time here,” Klimosko said. “He was never promised anything from his first year on and he just worked his way onto the team and was very key to our success the last couple of years, [both] in the dressing room and out on the ice. He’s a great competitor, a great kid and just keeps working hard and keeps battling.”
