Ninth person charged in Laverdiere homicide investigation seeks a bail hearing

The ninth person charged in the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation, appearing in North Battleford provincial court Monday, hopes to make an application for a bail hearing in the near future.

Charles St. Savard, 33, from Edmonton is facing charges that include first degree murder in Laverdiere’s death last year.

During St. Savard’s court appearance, COVID-19 precautions were in place in the courthouse and social distancing was enforced.

St. Savard’s charges were originally read as kidnapping and assault causing bodily harm. Crown prosecutor Chris Browne withdrew the assault charge, and replaced it with a charge of first degree murder instead.

St. Savard is looking at making an application for a bail hearing.

“Yeah, I want to get out of here,” he said when he was asked if he wanted to be appointed a defence counsel to seek a bail hearing for him at Queen’s Bench Court in the near future.

Appearing by phone the Legal Aid office representative said all the legal aid counsel have a conflict of interest in the case, but he will find an outside lawyer for the accused.

Crown prosecutor Chris Browne said there is about one terabyte of data to review from the Crown as part of its disclosure. In criminal trials, the Crown Prosecution Service has a duty to disclose all information it will use against the defence in trial.

Judge Murray Pelletier ordered St. Savard to abide by a no contact order for a list of 25 individuals that is protected by a temporary publication ban.

St. Savard who remains in custody will return to North Battleford provincial court Friday at 11 a.m.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford on April 29 of last year, and was last in contact with family via a text message May 1 of 2019. Human remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11, 2019 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16.
