Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame announces fall induction date for class of 2020

The Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame has announced the date for their 36th Annual Induction Ceremony, which will be held Oct. 3 at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford.

For the past 35 years, the induction ceremonies have been held in mid-August, but as CEO and President, Jane Shury told battlefordsNOW, the decision to postpone this year’s event do to the on-going pandemic was key to keeping the integrity of the celebration.

Shury said it’s important to hold the ceremony at a time when those honoured can truly enjoy the experience alongside family and friends; when people can come together and celebrate their accomplishments together.

“We have to be able to celebrate in honour of these people who are being inducted and in honour of the game of baseball and our rich baseball history in this province,” she said.

Additionally, due to the pandemic the Hall of Fame and Museum has been unable to host their usual fundraisers over the last couple of months. This makes a solid turnout at the induction even more important.

If restrictions do remain in place come October, Shury said the backup plan would be to hold the event over to next year as a double-header along with the class of 2021.

Shury said while it may be the ‘Saskatchewan’ Baseball Hall of Fame, the yearly induction ceremonies have consistently had a way of bringing people together from all over the place. People attend from across the province, the country, and even the world.

“There’s always several provinces represented as well as people from the United States,” she said. “We have had people here that have come specifically because of a father or grandfather or family member that was inducted; people from New Zealand, Australia, the UK and more. We have had some interesting celebrations with people from all over and it is really something amazing.”
