SARCAN Recycling reopens in North Battleford

Jun 16, 2020 | 5:00 PM

Residents in the Battlefords looking to get rid of a growing supply of bottles, cans and containers can finally do so, after the SARCAN Recycling facility reopened on June 15.

It’s been a steady lineup of customers at the front of the building over the last two days. Andrea Moosomin and her family were out front with several bags, excited to drop them off after more than two months.

“We washed everything out to begin with and then we had to hold it all outside, because flies were developing and it was just getting really bad,” Moosomin said. “So, we’re excited it’s finally open.”

Initially they had much more than their current total and had to get rid of them, so Moosomin said they were happy when groups collecting for charitable causes came by.

“We donated a few of our bags,” Moosomin said. “This is about a quarter of what we used to have.”

“Now we’re going to see a little bit of a return on our savings,” she said with a laugh.

Depot Supervisor Jeff Bogdan said the heavy volume of customers has been steady since the moment they opened on Monday.

“Opening until closing, it’s been lined up,” he said. “Just the way we like it.”

Because of COVID-19 precautions, the depot is enforcing social distancing rules in the lines outside the door. Bogdan said the community members have been very understanding.

“We’re doing the best we can, putting people through as fast as we can and we appreciate the patience people are showing,” he said.

Once the volume dips slightly, customers can use a service called Drop and Go to expedite the process of dropping off their bottles.

“They just come in the side door and put in their access code, which would probably be their phone number,” Bogdan said. “Print off their tags, tag their bags, drop them and [leave].”

Sign up is available online or at the depot and the service will be available later in the week.
