Town cancels parade, fireworks this year due to COVID-19 precautions

There will be no colourful floats or pyrotechnics show for the Town of Battleford this summer.

The town has cancelled its annual parade and fireworks that are normally held in August due to the province’s COVID-19 precautions.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the large gatherings these types of events draw do not meet the restrictions in place.

Outdoor gatherings will be permitted for only up to 30 people in phase three of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan starting Monday, he said. The fourth phase is unlikely to allow larger gatherings.

“Generally the parade and fireworks congregates people in excess of 30, so council and the parks and recreation department recommended we don’t have it this year,” he said.

Leslie said while it is a bit disappointing not to hold the events this year, he knows how important it is to follow the province’s protocols and stay safe.

“If you miss one year for the sake of keeping the curve flat I think it is a great idea,” he said. “Nobody ever wants to not have the parade, because it is a great community celebration. But in lieu of what is going on today and the hope to not have this curve go back, I think it is just the right choice to make.”
