North Battleford relatively unscathed after severe winds tore through Saskatchewan

The city of North Battleford managed to navigate the severe wind over the last few days relatively unscathed.

North Battleford saw winds gusting up to 70 km/h on Sunday evening, and up to 90 km/h on Monday morning.

Stewart Schafer, director of utility services and director of infrastructure services said they only had one report of a tree coming down in the city.

“The parks and arena manager said they had one tree blow down on one of the walking trails,” he said.

Crews will be busy through today cutting up and removing the downed tree so that the walking trails will be safe for residents to use.

The city will also be searching through the city looking for downed branches or any debris that is littering the streets.

“He has his crew right now just going up and down the streets picking up branches that have fallen off,” he said.

Schafer said he reached out to the city’s building maintenance crew to see if any of the infrastructure had been damaged by the wind.

“Building wise, so far none of the buildings seem to be affected,” he said. “The fence on the corner of 6th Avenue and 110th street, two of the panels fell off,” he added.

Schafer expects his crew will be able to collect the panels and reattach them to the fence. He said even though the wind was severe, the city only needs minor maintenance.

“Cleaning up the trees, the branches and the catch basins so they are ready for rainfall. Other than that, nothing else really happened.”

Schafer expects his crew to have the cleanup completed by the end of the day on Tuesday.

Any residents who see a tree with broken branches that could become a hazard are asked to contact the city.
