Saskatchewan looking to appoint its own chief firearms officer

Saskatchewan has started the process of finding its own chief firearms officer (CFO).

In a media release Wednesday, the provincial government announced it was beginning a search for a new CFO, who historically has been appointed by the federal government.

Premier Scott Moe announced earlier this year that the province would be hiring its own CFO to administer the federal Firearms Act in the province. The individual also has jurisdiction over the licensing, transporting and carrying of firearms.

The announcement comes just two days after Justice Minister Don Morgan revealed the provincial government is considering taking the federal government to court to challenge the new gun ban.

“We believe a provincially appointed Chief Firearms Officer will be well-positioned to represent Saskatchewan’s position on firearms regulation to the federal government,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said in the release.

The job is to be posted Thursday with a closing date of June 10.
