Youth invited to join online ‘Teen Talk Tuesday’

May 26, 2020 | 1:00 PM

Teens from around the province and beyond are invited to join an online conversation being offered by a Melfort based wellness coach.

Laura Lawrence of MindBody Balance Therapies is hosting ‘Teen Talk Tuesday’ as an extension of the Youth Matter symposium held last October in Melfort that saw over 300 youth in attendance.

“The teens are a group that aren’t really talked a lot about during this time of the world pandemic and I figured what a great way to do an extension of that mental wellness movement than to host a weekly talk,” Lawrence said.

The first call last Tuesday had about 15 youth that ranged from ages 12-18 join in.

“There were some from Carrot River, from Humboldt and Tisdale so it was great to see,” Lawrence said. “We had a lot of laughs, it is really just about connecting and chatting and creating a space for them to just talk about simple things.”

Lawrence said that is one major and important thing that teens are no longer getting with schools being closed and not being able to spend time with their friends and being in their social structures.

“We are able to provide the youth with self-care tips and of course reminding them that if they are struggling on a deeper level to reach out to a trusted adult,” Lawrence said.

Other resources that Lawrence refers to on the calls is the 2-1-1 Saskatchewan Health number for mental health crisis if they are in need of more support.

The call that features a new guest each week will welcome Shelley Enns of Shell’s Fitness and Soul Centre in Carrot River tonight.

“Working with youth is very near and dear to Shelley’s heart as she tragically lost her son Carter five years ago in a vehicle accident,” Lawrence said. “She has poured her heart and soul into bringing her skills as a yoga instructor and meditation instructor to help youth find some simple self-care tools to navigate.”

The same youth from last week have all signed up again according to Lawrence.

“I have also given them a challenge to each invite a friend and hopefully we can double our numbers at the very least,” Lawrence said. “it is really neat that they can connect with kids from all areas.”

The youth are given the opportunity to talk about what they want to talk about while being provided with leadership, inspiration and empowerment tools.

“We even had someone from the Yukon on last week and it would be so cool to see teens from every province in Canada, Lawrence said. “I am just really hoping to see a movement start with this because it would just be so beneficial for the youth to see that.”

Guests in the upcoming calls will include some of the panel speakers from the Youth Matter Symposium who will share their lived experience and skills with the youth. Other young adults will join some of the calls as well to really make that connection.

Youth can sign up at MindBodyBalanced.ca for the call that begins at 8 p.m. this evening and in the weeks to come.

Lawrence is also looking for individuals and business to sponsor each week with donations. MindBody Balance Therapies was last week’s sponsor and supplied inspirational stickers and a gift card, this week’s sponsor is Shell’s Fitness and Soul Centre.

“We just heard so much great feedback from the youth on the big symposium and even last Tuesday’s call, you could see the smiles and the excitement through the connection,“ Lawrence said. “Feeling a sense of belonging is what every human being long for.”

The six week series will wrap-up on June 23.

Lawrence had intended to once again coordinate and hold the Youth Matter Symposium in Melfort again this year in October but that remains undetermined with uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
