Local businesses donate to food bank

Amid a stressful time for Battlefords residents, as the community continues to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, a few local businesses were doing their part to get everyone to show off their ‘heart’ in support of non-profits.

Four K Auto and Hawtin Plumbing Services teamed up for a $500 donation to the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre. The donation follows a campaign where residents were encouraged to put craft pictures of hearts in their windows, with a dollar being added for every heart. Hawtin Plumbing owner Mitchell Hawtin said the donation was a no brainer.

“We just think it’s a very important organization, especially at times like this,” he said. “Always a group that we support, but especially right now.”

Owen Kaye, President of Four K Auto, said they also wanted to support their fellow residents amid the pandemic.

“We just wanted to get people to pull together,” Four K Auto President Owen Kaye said “To get the community spirit up. There’s lots of people off work. Sure, there’s some government subsidies for them, but overall economically, it’s tough on everybody.”

The money was donated without them actually reaching the goal of 500 hearts. Because so many residents are struggling, that decision was never in doubt.

“We kinda had the intention right from the start that we’d pay the full amount, but we wanted to engage as many people as we could,” Hawtin said.

They also hoped people will be inspired to put hearts on their windows when they see neighbours and drivers doing so. Kaye said he believes it’s already happening.

“There’s still windows everywhere that have hearts on them,” he said. “It’s amazing to see.”
