City roadways contract approved for 2020 capital works projects

May 26, 2020 | 4:00 PM

It was a good night for the City of North Battleford Monday when council awarded a contract for the roadways portion of the 2020 capital works projects that came in at a significant savings.

“The winning bid was 31 per cent under budget,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “We awarded the underground work several weeks ago and that was also considerably under budget. So we are finding that the construction work for the season is under budget, which is very good for city taxpayers, and using city resources.”

Council approved the contract for North Battleford firm G & C Asphalt — a division of N.P.A. Ltd., the lowest of three proposals, with a bid of $2,640,475.

The funding covers roadway work for six projects: the 100 Street rehabilitation (from 12 to 14 Avenue); 95 Street rehabilitation (from 15 to 16 Avenues), 110 Street (from Eight to Nine Avenues), 101 Street (from 19 to 20 Avenues); Carlton Trail improvements; and the Cameron McIntosh Airport’s Community Airport Partnership (CAP) Project upgrades (runway 12 to 30).

Administration noted the airport runway project was anticipated to be jointly funded by the province’s CAP program and the city. The program is being continued this year in the province’s budget and funding is expected to increase for the project. The city submitted an application for the funding and hopes to hear back shortly.

The mayor said now that the second contract was awarded for the city’s 2020 capital works projects, the next step is to develop a schedule for the roadway and underground initiatives and “get this work started.” He added awarding the latest contract was a big step to help the city proceed with its plans ahead.
