Two arrested for drugs, weapons charges near Biggar

Two male suspects are facing drug-related and weapons charges following an RCMP investigation near Biggar.

RCMP found numerous controlled substances and several weapons, including a spent light anti-tank weapon in their search, which left a Mountie injured with a gunshot wound.

Police reported Tuesday that Saskatchewan RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime laid a number of charges after executing a search warrant.

“This investigation has removed significant quantities of dangerous drugs from our communities,” Sgt. Jason Kerr, Saskatchewan RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime, said in a statement. “The Saskatchewan RCMP is committed to targeting and disrupting the sale of illicit drugs in our province. The types of drugs seized during this investigation have had dangerous, and at times, deadly impacts on the residents of Saskatchewan.”

Saskatchewan RCMP officers searched a rural property, 27 kilometres north of Biggar, in the R.M. of Glenside, on May 15 as part of their investigation, involving a residence, two outbuildings and two vehicles.

Police said as a result of their search, they located and seized a significant quantity of drugs including: 1,000 grams of methamphetamine; 444 grams of fentanyl, equal to 4,400 single doses; 3,035 mL of gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB); 500 alazopram (Xanax) pills; and 400 tabs of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).

Police said other items relating to the trafficking of controlled substances seized include: $16,080 in Canadian currency; two money counters; scales, packaging for drugs; eight cellphones and several computers and tablets.

Officers also recovered several weapons including a semi-automatic assault rifle, a shotgun, a sawed-off double barrel shot gun, a spent light anti-tank weapon and a revolver. Body armour was also recovered.

As a result of this investigation two men are facing charges.

Kurt Elliot Miller, 39, of Glenside, was arrested following a traffic stop May 14 in Regina. Miller is facing the following charges: possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine); possession for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine); possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000; possession of a weapon dangerous to the public; and breach of probation.

As a result of the property search, Miller is facing the following charges: possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, alazopram (Xanax), gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for the purpose of trafficking; possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000; and 16 criminal code charges related to firearms.

Mitch Hutchinson, 49, of Glenside, was arrested while RCMP executed a search warrant at the property May 14.

Hutchinson is facing charges of: possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, alazopram (Xanax), gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for the purpose of trafficking; and possession for the purposes for trafficking marijuana; possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000; and 18 criminal code charges related to firearms.

Hutchinson will make his first court appearance Tuesday at Saskatoon Provincial Court. Miller will make his first court appearance Tuesday at Regina Provincial Court.

An RCMP officer was injured at the residence near Biggar May 14. Officers were preparing to execute the search warrant, when shots were fired in their direction. Police said no RCMP officers discharged their weapons during this incident. The officer’s injury was non-life threatening. No charges have been laid to date.

The investigation is ongoing.
