Share when you support local, mayor says

As businesses in phase two of the province’s Re-Open plan welcome customers through their doors for the first time in months after closing due to the coronavirus pandemic, the City of North Battleford is encouraging residents to share their shopping experiences this week.

“Let people know that you are supporting local,” Mayor Ryan Bater said.

Residents can do so online by using the hashtag #MyNorthBattleford for any stops at businesses, especially with so many opening up this week. The goal is to highlight available options for shopping in the region by sharing any purchases from a retailer or service with the rest of the community.

“You might be alerting your friends on Facebook or Instagram or even Twitter to things that maybe they didn’t realize were available here in the city,” Bater said.

Bater said residents shouting out local purchases are helping their neighbours.

“These are businesses that have supported our kids’ hockey teams and support local initiatives,” he said. “[They’ve] been a part of this community.”

However, Bater said residents must remember that just because businesses can open this week, doesn’t mean they will, due to the costs and constraints of safety measures.

“Depending how those individual business people feel, they may choose not to open,” he said.

He said anyone looking to find out which businesses are opening can also search on thingsthatareopen.com.
