A beautiful day for golf as courses open around the province

May 15, 2020 | 3:15 PM

It is a perfect day for golf.

Friday marked the day golfers around the province have had circled on the calendar for some time. Nearly a month after the provincial government first announced May 15th as the date golf courses could open their doors for the season, they did just that to bring in the long weekend.

The re-opening of golf courses serves as the latest benchmark in the five phase Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan. A plan designed to carefully kick-start the economy once again.

However, even the local golf courses in the Battlefords’ community couldn’t have anticipated a better day weather-wise to mark the occasion.

Director of Golf at North Battleford Golf and Country Club, Dana Johnson, said there has already been a flood of calls, with people eager to take to the course for the first time this year.

“It’s been great, everyone’s anxious to get started for this year, and we’re looking forward to a great 2020 season,” Johnson said. “This morning, this weekend and even up to a week in advance for booking it’s going to be busy and we’re looking forward to a great year.”

Terry Osatchoff was one of the first golfers on the course this morning. Taking in the day with friends, he said they have been chomping at the bit in anticipation of the season starting, and couldn’t have asked for better conditions on a beautiful morning.

“We’re all glad to be out here golfing, and the happiest person is my wife because I’m out of the house,” Osatchoff said with a laugh. “It’s beautiful, the weather’s great, and we’ve been waiting a long time so we’re happy.”

While the courses are still mostly the same, restrictions remain in place for the safety of golfers and staff alike, as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Those intending to participate must be aware of the rule changes which include the continued closure of clubhouse buildings, ongoing social distancing expectations and advance booking of tee-times ahead of play.

Elaine and Victor Liebaert, of Rustic Nine Golf Course in North Battleford said while things may be a bit different this year due to the precautions, they are just happy to be open and offer a place for families to come to make the most of their summer.

“There are lots of new rules and new things to abide by, but we’re excited to be open for sure,” Elaine said. “There’s not many sports people can do right now, but at least with this, people can keep their distance and [get some physical activity].”

Victor added with the long weekend arriving, and school remaining closed for the time being, the course has already fielded a number of calls from families booking their tee-times to come and enjoy.
