#MyNorthBattleford: Showing support for local businesses

May 6, 2020 | 3:00 PM

A new way to show support for local businesses has sprung up in North Battleford.

The City of North Battleford is promoting the use of a new hashtag, #MyNorthBattleford, to help residents show support for local business.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater said the COVID-19 pandemic is a difficult period for everyone.

“This has been a tough time for everybody. Lots of challenges. It has been particularly challenging for business in our community,” he said.

Bater said a lot of local businesses have had to change their day-to-day operations.

“There have been closures and the like but a lot of them [businesses] have had to adapt by offering delivery services, takeout or walk up,” he said.

Bater is encouraging residents to take a picture of themselves anytime they are shopping locally and post it with the new #MyNorthBattleford hashtag.

“We wanted to start asking people, when they are supporting a business here in North Battleford to let everybody know about it. Share it on social media,” he said. “If you have ordered a pizza, take a picture of your pizza with your family and post it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram,” he added.

Bater said the new hashtag isn’t limited to just ordering food. If residents are doing any shopping locally that can be included.

“Even if you are just picking up some hardware or something or whatever it is, let’s just let the community know that these businesses are open and you are supporting them,” he said. “You might be showing something other people didn’t know was available.”

Bater said another great resource for people who are looking to support local businesses but aren’t sure what is open is thingsthatareopen.com — a website designed to inform residents of the Battlefords what business are open during the pandemic and what hours they are operating.
