North Battleford – the right move, right now!

May 4, 2020 | 2:33 PM

Jennifer Niesink moved to North Battleford with a plan to stay for three years to gain work experience. It’s now been 10 years and she has no intention of leaving.

“It is a pretty great place to live,” said Niesink, who is the Director of Corporate Services for the city. “Anyone can make North Battleford home, whether you’re from here or not.”

And there has never been a better time to make North Battleford home. Mortgage interest rates are at an all-time-low, and everyone involved in the construction process from builders to surveyors are eager to tender as the economic and regulating effects of COVID-19 begin to wear off. The City of North Battleford is also offering two incentives that increase the affordability of a new build right now.

Communications Administrator for the city Dustin Tungilik MacDonald said, “It’s the perfect opportunity to affordably build the house of your dreams and still be able to afford what you want to do outside of building that house.”

Available lots in the community’s most desirable neighbourhoods of Killdeer Park and Fairview Heights are being offered with 15 per cent off the list price. On top of that, there is a residential build incentive that applies to the municipal portion of property taxes.

“It’s a five-year phase incentive where we abate the municipal taxes by 100 per cent the first three years, 75 per cent the fourth year and then 50 per cent for the fifth year,” she explained.

The Residential Incentive applies to all single-family homes, duplexes, townhouses and apartment construction.

Although still relatively new, both Killdeer and Fairview Heights are already thriving neighbourhoods ready to build. Located in the northwest and northeast edges of the city respectively, the areas meet the local shopping, recreational and social needs of residents.

“These are the most sought-after neighbourhoods in the city,” said Niesink. “It’s the perfect place to raise a family. Its near the shopping centres, close to walking trails and has beautiful views of the prairie landscape. Having an enjoyable place to live, work and play creates a strong sense of community.”

In addition to offering one of the most affordable costs of living in the country, North Battleford itself features a variety of appealing attractions including two picturesque golf courses and recreation facilities that rival those in larger centres like Saskatoon. The Twin Rivers Curling Club has six sheets of ice where beginners can learn to throw rocks and veterans can play alongside professionals like provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Robyn Silvernagle. Saskatchewan’s best ski hill Table Mountain and nearby Jack Fish lake offer area residents the best of both winter and summer.

There is also a vibrant arts and culture scene with two galleries, two movie theatres and the Dekker Centre for Performing Arts which brings world class entertainment to the community regularly.

“Affordability is perhaps the biggest incentive to build a home right now in North Battleford, but the quality of life and opportunities in our vibrant community is what will keep you here,” said Niesink.
