Household Hazardous Waste Day coming this weekend

As the warm weather begins to roll into the Battlefords, residents are getting started on their yearly spring cleaning.

The City of North Battleford is helping that along with their semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, May 9.

On that day, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., residents of North Battleford are being encouraged to take their household hazardous waste to the drop-off location at the Public Works Shop at 11112-6th Avenue.

The program is only available for North Battleford residents and no commercial loads will be accepted.

Dustin MacDonald, communications administrator for the City of North Battleford, said this program offers residents a chance to safely discard household hazardous materials that can cause issues if not properly disposed of.

“It allows residents to remove hazardous household products that shouldn’t be put down the drain or taken to the landfill because of their toxic properties. It allows for us to dispose of it in a safe and environmentally friendly manner,” he said.

The city asks residents to bring their hazardous materials in their original containers with the labels intact and to not mix the products. If the original container is not available, label the materials, and if you don’t know the specific product name label the product with the proper category from the following list: Adhesives, Aerosols, Automotive, Cleaners, Fuels, Mercury, Oxidizers, Poisons and Solvents.

With the COVID-19 situation still unfolding in the province, the city has added some strict new guidelines to help the public and their employees maintain proper social-distancing.

They ask that you load the materials into the trunk of your car or bed of your truck. Approach the shop on 6th Avenue from 114th Street. A greeter at the gate will control access to the yard and answer any quests. When directed, drive your vehicle into the building to the drop-off location. Turn off the vehicle and do not exit the vehicle. Staff will remove the household hazardous materials and will inquire about unlabeled materials. When completed, continue forward to exit the building and follow the signs exiting the grounds onto 6th Avenue.

“Everyone is going to be practicing safe social-distancing through this whole event and employees will be wearing appropriate PPE,” MacDonald said.

The city is also asking to limit the vehicles to just the driver if possible, as there will be no need for additional help in unloading the materials. Anyone who is sick is also asked not to attend this event.

MacDonald also wanted to remind everyone if they are unable to attend this event for one reason or another, they will be running the program again in September.
