Big River Mill temporarily closing amid COVID-19 pandemic

Mar 27, 2020 | 6:20 PM

Carrier Forest Products Ltd. announced they are temporarily suspending operations at the Big River Mill, effective immediately.

A major contributor to the forest industry in Saskatchewan since 1995, the mill employs approximately 85 people, all whom had their shifts laid off.

In an email to battlefordsNOW, Carrier Lumber Ltd President William Kordyban said, “We sincerely hope these layoffs will only last a short time.” And that their focus continues to be, “on the communities in which we operate, the health and safety of our employees and the long-term viability of the company.”

This comes as sawmills, lumber stores and other businesses in the industry are feeling the effects of COVID-19, with the possibility of the U.S. border closing hanging over the past week.
