The sentencing for two individuals who each previously pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation were adjourned, due to the court’s directives related to COVID-19 precautions.

Brent Checkosis and Mavis Takakenew who are in custody were scheduled to appear at Queen’s Bench Court in Battleford Wednesday for sentencing but their cases were postponed to May 15 instead.

Checkosis, 19, pleaded guilty on Dec. 20, 2019 to accessory after the fact to the murder of Tiki Laverdiere on May 1, 2019, in North Battleford.

Checkosis did not enter any plea to the outstanding charges of improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

His sentencing hearing was held Feb. 10.

Mavis Takakenew, 55, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder on Feb. 10. Her sentencing hearing was held the same day.

Checkosis and Takakenew are among eight facing a charge connected to the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation.

The court ordered a publication ban on all details of the separate hearings for Checkosis and Takakenew, including evidence, and victim impact statements until the judge or jury, depending on the matter, involving all the other accused in the case have retired to consider their verdict.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford on May 1. Human remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16.
