‘Fuel station first project to pursue’ for Chief Wuttunee, re-elected as Red Pheasant Chief

Clint Wuttunee has been re-elected as Chief of Red Pheasant, following the First Nation’s recent election.

Wuttunee topped two challengers; Todd Baptiste and Lester Nicotine, taking 648 of the 1,078 total votes, for 60 per cent of the overall vote.

Also re-elected were councillors Lux Benson, Shawn Wuttunee, Dana Falcon, Gary Nicotine, Mandy Cuthland and Henry Gardipy Jr.; while Jason Chakita and Samuel Wuttunee make up the newly elected councillors.

Both the chief and councillors were elected to a four-year term.

A representative for Chief Wuttunee said the chief is pleased to be able to continue the economic and community development projects in North Battleford, with the fuel station being the first project to pursue.

Red Pheasant is currently working on the construction of a Petro-Canada service station on the east side of Territorial Dr., near 15th Avenue in North Battleford. The project is part of the First Nation’s plans for an ‘urban reserve development’ on land purchased by Red Pheasant in 1992.

The Red Pheasant election was held March 20, despite concerns regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The First Nation said in an official statement, “as Saskatchewan has one of the lowest numbers of cases of COVID-19 in Canada, we feel it [was] the responsible thing to do to complete this election before our numbers of those infected may become higher and there is more risk to the community.”
