Two accused in Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation back in court

The cases for two of the eight individuals facing charges in connection to the death of Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere were back in North Battleford provincial court Friday. Danita Thomas was given permission with a set of strict conditions to see a copy of the disclosure in her case, while Nicole Cook had her case adjourned to next month.

Both Thomas and Nicole Cook are facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Danita Thomas, already scheduled for a three-week preliminary hearing from Nov. 30 to Dec. 18, who appeared in court via CCTV from Pine Grove Correctional Centre, requested a copy of her disclosure, according to her defence counsel who appeared by phone.

Judge Daniel O’Hanlon issued an order to permit the defence to allow Thomas to see a copy of the disclosure in her case with a number of conditions that include: the addresses and other personal or sensitive information of other individuals would be removed from the document, the disclosure would be used only to prepare to defend the accused’s charges, Thomas would be prohibited from reproducing, or storing it on an electronic retrieval system, or transmitting any form of it, or giving any part of it to the public or the press. The copy would be kept at the correctional centre and the rules to access it would be strictly adhered to.

Another accused, Nicole Cook, had her case adjourned to April 24 at 11 a.m. at North Battleford provincial court at her defence counsel’s request. The appearance of Cook who remains in custody was waived for Friday’s court proceedings.

Nicole is the mother of Tristen Cook-Buckle, whose funeral Laverdiere attended on April 27, 2019 on the Thunderchild First Nation, prior to her disappearance.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019 and last seen in North Battleford on May 1. Human remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16.
