Saskatchewan RCMP detachments to remain open, officers available amidst COVID-19 concerns

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Saskatchewan RCMP is letting the public know that despite the restriction of social distancing, members are still available. However, there will be a new response protocol aimed at reducing the risk of exposure for officers.

In a media release Tuesday, the RCMP said detachments will remain open to the public and local officers will continue to provide service to the community. Due to social distancing concerns, there will be a temporary suspension of criminal record checks, with the exception of employment checks at detachments across the province.

Staff will take on additional cleaning measures to keep detachments and police vehicles as clean as possible.

To help maintain officer wellbeing, dispatchers will ask two new questions to assess health concerns when callers request police assistance.

• Are you or any member of your residence ill at this time?
• Have you or any member of your residence had contact with a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19?

The new questions are to ensure officers reduce the risk of transmission.

Assistant Commissioner and Commanding Officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP Mark Fisher said the situation surrounding COVID-19 “continues to be fluid and evolving quickly.”

“Please remember our work as the Provincial Police Service continues across the province,” he said. “Saskatchewan residents have a long history of working together to overcome adversity. The Saskatchewan RCMP is committed to doing our part to ensure our communities are healthy and safe.”
