Town to have March 16 council meeting at new location

Mar 16, 2020 | 5:13 PM

The Town of Battleford has moved the location for its council meeting on March 16.

The meeting will be held at the Alex Dillabough Centre’s Main Hall at 7 p.m., instead of at the town hall building.

The town moved to the new location for this meeting only, so there is adequate room to meet social distancing requirements between people attending, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

People are asked to bring their own water bottle for safety reasons.

“Part of the procedures to address the pandemic at-hand is social distancing,” Mayor Ames Leslie said. “The present council chambers with the roundtable type of approach doesn’t allow enough space to create social distancing of up to two metres between councillors, and also doesn’t provide sustainable distance for the gallery, the media, or management and staff as well, to try and maintain that two metres of social distancing [space].”

Leslie said the town is looking at having only the March 16 meeting at the new location, so far.

“It may carry on for the next couple of weeks, but we’re not too sure,” the mayor said. “It depends on what information is provided to us by the Ministry of Health, as to what kind of precautions we should take. But at this point it is just for tonight [Monday].”
