Battlefords area musicians set to take the stage at Telemiracle

Some local Battlefords area talent is set to perform at this year’s Kinsmen Telemiracle Saskatchewan.

Troy Wakelin and his bandmates Garth Howell, Kurtis Kopp, Malcolm Whyte, and Sam Derbawka will be taking the Telemiracle stage as overnight performers. They will have a 45-55 minute set at 2 a.m. on March 8, where they plan to play some of the best country music from the 80s’ and 90s’ as well as a few original songs.

Troy Wakelin said the band came together with the intention of playing at Telemiracle.

“This will be the first gig that I will play with these guys, we got this together for Telemiracle,” he said.

Wakelin said he and Kopp, who is from the Battlefords, have known each other a long time and toured together with the Louisiana Hayride.

Sam Derbawka is also from the Battlefords and has toured both nationally and internationally playing the mandolin and fiddle.

Malcolm Whyte is the group’s bass player and is from the Saskatoon area. He has also toured extensively playing bass for various groups.

Garth Howell is from Martensville and will play guitar for the group. He will also be playing guitar for Lisa Moen on the national cast for Telemiracle.

Wakelin said he is very pleased with the group they were able to put together for the show.

“We just wanted to get as good of guys as we can and you can’t get better players than what I have lined up. Maybe we will do some other things after this, we have been sounding pretty good in our rehearsals so we are happy to go out and play and support something like this,” he said.

Wakelin was happy to hear every donation they bring in will be matched by Nutrien.

“Every donation that we bring in will be matched by Nutrien. So any donations that Saskatchewan performers bring in will be matched for Telemiracle,” he said.

Telemiracle 44, will take place on the main stage of the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina from 9 p.m. on March 7, 2020 till 5 p.m. on March 8, 2020. It will be broadcast on CTV channels in Saskatchewan and live streamed on CTV Regina and CTV Saskatoon websites.
