Former Saskatchewan teacher charged with sexual assault

Feb 20, 2020 | 11:12 AM

A historic sexual assault investigation has resulted in charges against a 57-year-old man.

Gerard Loehr has been charged with five counts of sexual assault, and six counts of sexual interference relating to alleged incidents between 1990 and 1996, a time where he was a teacher in Foam Lake, and Wynyard.

Wynyard RCMP were contacted in February 2019 by an adult female to file a historic sexual assault report. Since then, five other individuals have come forward and given information to police about Loehr.

Due to the length of time that has passed, there’s a few things that may not be as clear.

“We might not have the exact details about which schools he may have taught in, he may have taught a variety of subjects,” RCMP Spokesperson Mandy Maier said. “So some of those details may not be as clear, so that’s part of the investigation.

Loehr’s teaching history includes a period of time as a music teacher in Ottawa, Ont. most recently. He taught in Ottawa schools since 2000.

Loehr was also charged with sexual assault and sexual interference in a related investigation in Ottawa.

RCMP also say that even though charges have been laid, there may be other victims out there.

“Reach out,” Maier said. “We know there’s the potential perhaps for more victims. So, we’re encouraging anyone with any information to come forward.”

Loehr was arrested in Ottawa on Feb. 17 and was transported to Saskatchewan to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on Tuesday, Feb. 18. He then appeared in Wadena Provincial Court on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
