A man charged in connection to a homicide on the Thunderchild First Nation in 2018 is now scheduled for a preliminary inquiry, after pleading not guilty at North Battleford Provincial Court.

Ivor Antoine Wapass, 44, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Roger Standingwater, 57, on Sept. 15, 2018. Wapass was arrested Nov. 1, 2019.

He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court via CCTV Tuesday.

Defence lawyer Jonathan Bodvarson entered a not-guilty plea for his client Wapass, and elected trial by judge and jury at Queen’s Bench Court.

Judge Lorna Dyck set a four-day preliminary inquiry for June 10, 11, 17 and 18 to determine if there is sufficient evidence for trial.

Crown prosecutor Suzanne Reid anticipates up to 21 witnesses will testify.

A case-management session is scheduled for March 25.

Wapass remains in custody after a bail hearing last week.
