Above and below average temperatures on deck for Battlefords area this week

Feb 10, 2020 | 1:13 PM

Residents of the Battlefords area should prepare for an up and down week temperature-wise.

Starting the week off with above average temperatures, Monday and Tuesday have forecasted daytime highs of -3 Celsius. Unfortunately by Tuesday night the forecasted low temperature drops to -24 C.

Sara Hoffman, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, outlined the cause for this sudden drop in temperature.

“Beginning Tuesday morning a low pressure system will form in Alberta and head eastward across the Prairies. Behind that cold front associated with that low, an Arctic ridge will build in from the North which will create some snowfall along that front,” she said.

That means on Tuesday, the Battlefords area will see some snowfall through the day as the low pressure system makes its way across the province.

Hoffman said as the low pressure system moves out and the Arctic ridge settles in we will start to see the below average temperatures set in.

This cold front will continue through Wednesday, with a daytime high of -18 C and -23 C overnight.

According to Hoffman the western parts of the province will be less affected by the Arctic ridge than the east.

On Thursday, the cold front snaps will start trending toward warmer temperatures for the weekend.

Thankfully by Friday the warmer than average temperature will return with a forecasted daytime high of -4 C.
