Top up the wiper fluid as temperatures hit – 2 C

While preparing for a mild January weekend, motorists are being encouraged to travel safely.

Temperatures hovering around zero Celsius will melt snow and ice, which can present new driving hazards beyond slippery roadways.

“When the temperatures reach above 0 C you know there is going to be a lot of other vehicles kicking up dirty water onto your windshield,” Tyler McMurchy, media relations and communications manager with SGI, said. “You’ll go through wiper fluid quite quickly so it’s important to keep that topped up.”

“It’s just important to keep your windows clean before you head out. You want to be able to see and have a clear view of the road,” he said.

McMurchy noted it’s also incumbent on drivers to keep brake lights, tail lights, and headlights clean at all times as well keeping licence plate numbers visible.

Motorists who fail to keep an unimpeded view of the road could face potential fines.

“There is an offence for driving without a clear view of the highway to the front and sides of the vehicle… It carries a $125 fine,” McMurchy told paNOW.

McMurchy added with temperatures rising to – 2 C over the next couple of days in multiple communities, motorist should also be aware of freeze-thaw conditions on the roads and drive according to the road conditions.

While keeping windshield wiper fluid is important, it’s also essential to keep wiper blades in good order.

A Prince Albert Canadian Tire Automotive Technician recommended motorists change their wiper blades two times per year in the spring and fall.
