Weekends forecast look like perfect condition for snowmobile trail riding

Snowmobile enthusiasts in Northwestern Saskatchewan will be chomping at the bit to get out for a ride this weekend.

With last week’s -30 Celsius temperatures giving way to single-digit highs this week, and a few inches of fresh snow it is the perfect conditions for some snowmobiling.

The Battlefords Trailbreakers Snowmobile Club signs, marks and grooms over 450 kilometers of snowmobile trails around the Battlefords area.

The club has been a part of the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association (SSA) since 1998 and is one of 43 clubs in the province that grooms and marks trails. There are over 30 active members in teh club.

Dale Woytiuk, SSA delegate and trail master for the Trailbreakers, said they have second largest trail system in Saskatchewan.

“Basically our trail system uses the Battlefords as a hub but stretches as far down South and East as Denholm and as far North and West as Turtle Lake,” he said.

Woytiuk said this weekend’s warm forecast will make for busy trails.

He said signs are up, trails are marked and two trail groomers continue to work the trails. The entire 450 kilometres are expected to be groomed by tomorrow afternoon.

“We are real close, as long as nothing breaks down, we should have it groomed for the weekend. We are expecting a lot of riders out this weekend. I have been getting texts and emails this last week inquiring about the trails,” he said.

The Trailbreakers also have 11 warm-up shacks spotted at different areas along their trails for riders to warm up or unwind in.

“Each shelter is roughly 30 to 40 kilometers apart so riders can ride the trails and visit two or three shacks. They are all equipped [with] firewood, woodstoves, outdoor bathrooms and lighting,” he said.

Woytiuk said each shelter is unique with its own theme.

“Our club is getting pretty well known across the province for the quality and uniqueness of our warm-up shelters. We have different styles and themes. Gorde’s General Store is done up to look like an old store, Barley Bin is a converted old round grain ring, and our newest one up North is the Rider Hut which is all Roughrider themed,” he said.

Anyone looking for more information on the location and status of the trails can visit the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association website for an up to date trail map. All riders must have their snowmobile plated with SGI while riding the trails.

“The variety of our trails, our warm-up shelters and the conditions will be appealing to snowmobilers. It is a real treat to ride into a warmup shelter, have a wiener roast on the woodstove and back out for some more,” he said.
