Stars dominate league honours for past week

The Battlefords North Stars made the most of a busy schedule last week, winning all four games the team played over five nights, to continue to stay hot atop the league standings.

Tuesday saw the North Stars defeat the Notre Dame Hounds 5-1, while Wednesday led to a 5-0 final over Melville. Friday was a 6-3 double-up on La Ronge, and Saturday – a convincing 3-2 decision on the Hounds – to bookend the week with victories over their division rival.

The team’s success resulted in the Stars all but sweeping the league’s weekly accolades.

Forward Quintin Loon-Stewardson led the way for the team offensively, picking up three multi-point games, for two goals, and seven points over the calendar week.

The Sioux Lookout, ON., product picked up a pair of assists Tuesday, before scoring a goal and three points on Friday night. The younger Loon-Stewardson then added a goal and two points against the Hounds again Saturday, to close out the weekend.

With his torrent pace of late, Quintin Loon-Stewardson now leads the North Stars with 27 goals, 49 points this year, and sits eighth overall in the league scoring race.

Quintin narrowly edged out brother, Elijah Loon-Stewardson for Player of the Week status.

Elijah, who finished as runner-up, also posted seven points over the four-game span. His hot play of late continues a scoring surge of his own, that has seen the elder Loon-Stewardson pick up points in 10-straight.

On the back end, rearguard, Seth Summers took home Defenceman of the Week.

Summers picked up points in each of the team’s four wins, highlighted by a multi-point performance Tuesday. He then also added an additional two helpers over his next two games, with the native of St. Albert, AB., scoring his second of the week Saturday.

Summers’ 10 goals lead all blue liners this year, while his 38 points sit just two back of teammate, Matthew Fletcher for tops amongst defencemen.

Fletcher also picked up five points on the week, including two multi-point games in his own right, to finish as runner-up for Defenceman of the Week distinction.

In goal, netminder, Kristian Lyon took home SJHL Goaltender of the Week, after posting a perfect 42-save shutout performance in his Stars’ debut Wednesday. The 19-year-old then continued his stellar play the following contest against La Ronge, stopping 37 of 40 shots on the night, to improve to 2-0 in a Stars’ uniform.

Austin Schwab was named runner-up for Goaltender of the Week honours, posting two straight wins. Schwab stopped 30-of-31 Hounds’ shots Tuesday, and added an additional 27-of-29 Saturday, to close out the week.

Head coach of the North Stars, Brayden Klimosko said he is proud of what his team has been able to accomplish as of late, adding that the six players singled out by the league puts the team in rarified air.

“I think it just shows it was a group effort all week,” Klimosko said. “It was a big week: winning four in five is never easy and for us to get it done, it is obviously pretty special. It may be the last time it happens where you have three guys win [weekly honours] plus three runners up, so it feels good. The guys deserve it and hopefully we keep on rolling. It was a good week for us and hopefully we build off that.”

With the four consecutive wins, the Stars are now 26-7-2 through their opening 45 games this year. The team will return to action Jan. 24 against the Melfort Mustangs.

Friday’s game will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will begin with pregame at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
