No garbage pickup

Extreme cold weather means no garbage pickup for second day in Battleford

Jan 16, 2020 | 2:00 PM

The Town of Battleford announced there will not be any garbage pickup in the community again today due to inclement weather.

With that announcement comes the request for residents to remove garbage containers from the street.

Eric Bilanski, public works manager for Battleford, said operating the truck in temperatures below 30 Celsius can cause a lot of issues.

“There are a lot of moving parts on these trucks. Not only the hydraulic hoses, but also the electrical cables are a big issue,” he said. “They just can’t take that cold and once they break… you are down.”

Bilanski said if your garbage collection is usually on Wednesday or Thursday, the pickup is rescheduled for tomorrow.

“Judging by the weather forecast for tomorrow, I intend to go out,” he said.

Bilanski noted the town does not normally have pickups scheduled for Fridays but this will be an exception due to the lack of pick-ups.
