Firefighters battle blaze at home on Centennial Crescent

Jan 2, 2020 | 12:34 PM

North Battleford Fire Department firefighters battled a blaze at a home on Centennial Cres. yesterday afternoon.

Fire Chief Lindsay Holm said the two occupants managed to escape in time. One of the individuals sustained minor injuries from smoke inhalation and was treated by paramedics.

“One of the good things is that all the occupants were able to make it out safely,” he said.

Holm said firefighters tried to rescue a pet dog that was still inside afterwards, unfortunately it did not survive the blaze.

“The home sustained a pretty significant structural damage,” he said.

Firefighters were called to the location at 1742 Centennial Cres. at about 4 p.m.

When firefighters responded they identified heavy smoke coming from the back of the building.

“Once our crews arrived we found we were facing a pretty heavy deep-seated fire in the rear of the structure,” Holm said. “There was heavy smoke issuing from the structure.”

Firefighters tried to enter the building three times but were driven out due to excessive heat levels. The fire department reports they used a “defensive fire attack” from the exterior to bring fire conditions under control to enter the building and extinguish the blaze.

A total of 13 firefighters were on the scene for almost eight hours, with two fire engines, an aerial apparatus, a command vehicle and a utility vehicle.

The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation.
