Year in Review: Federal election sees Falk continue Tory stronghold

Dec 25, 2019 | 5:00 PM

On the political front, this past year proved to be an exciting one when local candidates vied for votes in October’s federal election.

Conservative incumbent Rosemarie Falk manged to once again secure the Tories’ stronghold on Battlefords-Lloydminster and retain her seat in the House of Commons.

Falk surpassed other candidates by a wide margin with more than 79 per cent of the vote over the NDP’s Marcella Pedersen, the Liberal’s Larry Ingram, the Green Party’s David Kim-Cragg and the People’s Party of Canada’s Jason MacInnis.

Pedersen earned 11.2 per cent, while Ingram trailed in third with 6.3 per cent. Both MacInnis and Kim-Cragg earned less than two per cent of the vote.

During her campaign, Falk continued to push for Andrew Scheer’s Conservative platform that included scrapping the carbon tax, standing up for oil and gas sector workers and supporting Canadian farmers’ interests. She was focused on being a strong voice for families, taxpayers and rural communities.

Ingram stood by the Liberal’s decision to purchase the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. He also supported carbon capture and sequestration and other green investments as a priority.

For Pedersen, her main focus was putting people before profit, as she stated many problems are caused by multi-national corporations and said government has very little influence to counteract.

MacInnis was a stern defender of the oil and gas sector, pledging to scrap the carbon tax and get pipelines built. He described the PPC as having a common-sense platform. He supported making efforts locally and nationally to spur the large economic drivers of the riding – oil and agriculture.

Kim-Cragg promoted a government that would make environmental issues a priority. He was also committed to an economy that would help lift people into a more stable living situation.
