North Stars, Broncos’ feud shifts venue to the Battlefords for part two

Dec 18, 2019 | 2:14 PM

The Battlefords North Stars return home Wednesday night for part two of their weekday doubleheader with the Humboldt Broncos, as the home-and-home series shifts locations to the NB Civic Centre.

The North Stars enter play in top spot of the division and first overall with a 28-6-2 record, giving the team 58 points this season.

Humboldt sit second in the division and sixth overall with a 16-14-5 record, good for 37 points on the year.

Both sides should be eager to return to the ice, following a 7-4 Stars’ victory Tuesday night in Humboldt.

The Stars will be looking to build on the momentum that saw the team explode for seven goals on the night, after being held to just two or fewer in six of their last seven games prior.

Meanwhile, Humboldt will be hungry to avenge their loss on home ice that came despite a decisive 44-21 shot advantage on the evening, and return the favour as spoilers in the Battlefords.

Six different North Stars cashed in for the team in Tuesday’s win, with three different offensive lines and two defence pairings contributing a goal on the night. Because of the contribution throughout the lineup, overall group morale should be at a high point for the team heading into play.

Adding an additional shot in the arm as well, the Stars will also see a return to the lineup from defensive stalwart, Noah Form.

Form missed Tuesday night’s contest due to illness but will return Wednesday, giving the Stars another core piece of their blue line, which helped steer the team to victory on Tuesday.

Of the club’s seven goals on the night, three came from defencemen. Rookie standout, Timon Prexler pitched in two on the evening, while Seth Summers added a goal and an assist of his own.

In addition to their offensive contribution, the blue line stood especially strong in penalty killing situations and late in the game with key shot blocking efforts led by veteran, Dylan McCabe.

McCabe blocked a handful in his own right throughout the evening, including three shots on a single penalty killing shift with the Broncos surging. The sacrifice comes at a price however, as the defenceman will miss Tuesday’s action with an upper body injury.

Missing one of their biggest difference makers once again on the back end, the Battlefords will need another big night from their young gun trio of defencemen, Prexler, Liam Antoniuk and Walter Somers to help fill the void against the pressing Humboldt attack.

Logan Foster was far and away the Broncos’ greatest threat Tuesday, picking up a goal and a helper on the night, while engineering a multitude of scoring chances for his linemates.

Foster enters play as hot as anyone on either side, having amassed four goals, seven points over his last three games; each a multi-point performance.

Netminder, Adam Dmyterko will get the call for the North Stars in goal for the second night of the back-to-backs. Dmyterko enters play with a 12-2 record on the year, to go along with a sterling 2.53 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.

At the other end, it remains to be seen who will get the nod for the Broncos, after a tough night between the pipes that saw goalies Brendan Forman and Dawson Cochrane combine for 13 saves on 21 shots.

Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
