Astronaut Chris Hadfield coming to Battlefords for Rotary centenary

Dec 2, 2019 | 3:13 PM

Hello, Spaceman.

World famous Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield will land in the Battlefords for the “Centennial Out of this World Celebration” to mark the Rotary Club of the Battlefords 100th anniversary in the new year.

The first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station will give presentations at events both for youth and the business community on April 24, 2020, as the honourary guest speaker at the festivities.

Rotary announced the big news at its meeting at the Blend Restaurant on Monday.

“We’re over the moon with this,” event co-chair Warren Williams said. “This is going to be the event of 2020 in the Battlefords. “Chris Hadfield is uniquely positioned to deliver the message to both our students and our business audience.”

The club plans to partner with a number of organizations to host the two events – an afternoon presentation at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School for more than 1,000 students, followed by an evening gala at the Dekker Centre for 350 business and community leaders.

Innovation Credit Union and Battlefords Tribal Council (BTC) have been announced as the major International Space Station Commander Sponsors for the event, with each organization contributing $25,000. A number of other sponsors will also support the event.

A maximum of 350 tickets will be available for the gala event. Advance tickets are currently available for Rotary members and sponsors. They will be available for the general public to purchase through the Dekker Centre in January 2020.
