Stars top Wings in Weyburn, cap road swing with 2-1 win

Nov 29, 2019 | 11:52 PM

The Battlefords North Stars continued their scorching hot play of late Friday, as the team capped their three-in-three road swing by defeating the Weyburn Red Wings 2-1 at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn.

With the victory the Stars improve to 19-2 over their last 21 games, and 26-3 on the year.

Stars’ forwards Elijah Loon-Stewardson and Carson Reagan scored for the team, while goaltender, Parker Rey stopped 18 of 19 shots-against for the win.

Rhett Frey potted one of his own for Weyburn in the loss, while Wings’ goalie, Joseph Young made 32 saves on 34 Stars’ shots.

After a scoreless first period, the Battlefords drew first blood on the night just over five minutes into the second thanks to forward, Elijah Loon-Stewardson.

The goal came off a gorgeous feed through the seam from Rylan Nivon, that Loon-Stewardson then proceeded to laser far-side, off the bar and in to make it 1-0.

The tally served as Loon-Stewardson’s tenth of the season and second in two nights.

After consistent pressure and dogged puck pursuit to follow, the Stars would add to their lead with an insurance marker before the end of the second period.

In the midst of killing a penalty, Brett Gammer chipped a puck into the attacking zone on a shorthanded rush. Chasing after it behind the net in support, Carson Reagan then picked up the loose biscuit with the goalie caught in no-man’s land on the wraparound try.

For Reagan, the goal marked the rookie’s fifth of the season and first shorthanded goal.

The two Stars’ goals were the only blemishes on either goalie’s record up to the final half-minute of the third.

Weyburn did strike late however, to break the shutout bid thanks to a Rhett Frey goal with just 32 seconds to go in regulation; 2-1 Stars, the final.

The North Stars will now get a few days to rest and regroup before returning to action Tuesday, Dec. 3 against the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox.

Tuesday’s game will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:45 p.m. with puck drop at 8 p.m. on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast.
