Stars complete weekend sweep with 4-2 win over Wings

The Battlefords North Stars completed their sweep of Southern Saskatchewan visitors over the weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Weyburn Red Wings Saturday night at the Civic Centre. The win follows up a 6-3 double-up win over Estevan the night prior.

Four different North Stars contributed goals in the win, as Matthias Urbanski pitched in a goal and a helper while Seth Summers, Dylan McCabe and Steven Kesslering each added a single tally. Forward Austin Becker added two assists as well.

In goal, the win serves as Austin Schwab’s sixth victory in as many games this season. The 18-year-old stopped 18 of 20 shots-against on the night for the win.

Stars’ goalie, Austin Schwab won back-to-back games for the team this weekend. With the victories, Schwab is now a perfect 6-0 on the season to go along with a 1.98 goals-against average and .929 save percentage. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

For Weyburn, Shayde Peterson and Ben Hiltz picked up the Wings’ goals, while netminder Joseph Young kept his team in it until late making 32 saves on 36 shots.

Peterson’s second of the season opened the scoring in the game, making it 1-0 Weyburn 12 minutes into the first.

Converting on a cross-crease play, Peterson’s marker was the lone goal for either side in the period. The Stars were held scoreless through the opening frame, despite outshooting the Wings 12-5.

In the second, the ice became tilted further, as Matthias Urbanski cashed in for his 12th of the campaign on the power play on a nice bang-bang play in front. Just like that, it was a 1-1 tie.

The Stars then made it 2-1, reversing the lead entirely before the end of the period, thanks to defenceman Seth Summers.

After snapping what seemed like a half-dozen shots on-goal through the first half of the game, Summers picked up a relay feed as the late man into the zone on a North Stars’ rush chance, blitzing a shot home on the wrister.

Summers, who had collected up a goal and assist the night prior against the Bruins, picked up right where he left off Saturday night. The blue liner has now scored in three-straight games and sits fourth in defencemen scoring with 21 points in 25 games this season. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

The goal gave the Battlefords their first lead of the contest. The team would remain in the drivers’ seat the remainder of the way.

Entering the third still ahead by a single, 2-1, the Stars made it 3-1 thanks to another power play strike.

Coming off the stick of rearguard, Dylan McCabe, the goal served as the defenceman’s third of the season and first against his former team; 3-1 Stars.

Steven Kesslering made it 4-1 on his fourth of the season. Tossing a puck past the goalie after forcing a turnover, the forward’s goal put any doubt about the night’s outcome to bed.

While Wings’ captain, Ben Hiltz closed out the scoring on the night with his eleventh, the goal came too late to matter much as the final was set, 4-2 North Stars.

The Stars will now get some time to rest up and enjoy their success, before returning to action Wednesday night in Yorkton against the Terriers. Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
