Thursday night in the Battlefords was one of fine wine, great food, and great value shopping at the Discovery Co-op Mall.

The inaugural Sip, Sparkle & Shop event sold out 500 tickets all in support of the Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation.

For one night, the Discovery Co-op Mall was shut down and reorganized into a festive gala where residents were treated to food, drinks, entertainment and shopping.

Tickets were $30 and came with $20 Co-op gift card for shopping at the event and $10 going directly to the BUH Foundation.

Leanne Ducommun, marketing and communications manager, for Discovery Co-op said that this was the first time they had shut the entire mall down for one event.

“We closed the mall for the first time ever; it has never been done. When I told everyone what I was doing they told me it had never been done but I knew we would be able to pull it off,” she said.

Ducommun said she had seen other malls around the province have events like this one and wanted to find a way to bring it to the Battlefords.

“Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon was actually doing it and we thought how can we bring this to the Battlefords and make it exceptional. We ended up partnering with the BUH Foundation and a few other businesses [to pull it off],” she said.

Claudette McGuire executive director at the BUH Foundation said they were happy to partner with Discovery Co-op for the new event.

“We have got 500 people in here, they have gone all out. Leanne Ducommun and her team at Discovery Co-op have just made this place into an amazing spot. There are all kinds of drinks, shopping specials. There are all kinds of entertainment and we are going to have a fashion show. I am very pleased that we got to be a part of this,” she said.

McGuire talked about how events like this one really help out the BUH Foundation.

“The proceeds from this event will go to our capital campaign. It is ready, set, baby to raise money to purchase fetal monitors and birthing beds for our labour and delivery unit at the BUH. We have 500 births a year and it is time to replace some equipment, we like to keep our patients safe and secure,” she said.

The inaugural event was such a great success Ducommun said Battlefords residents will want to keep their eyes open for tickets to next year’s Sip, Sparkle and Shop.
