North Stars embrace festive spirit this weekend

The Battlefords North Stars return to action Friday night for their first game in over a week, looking to help make a difference off the ice with their play on it.

Friday’s contest with the Estevan Bruins will be Toque and Mitten Toss night at the Civic Centre.

Fans are encouraged to bring with them any new or gently used toques or mittens to then toss onto the ice in celebration, following the Stars’ opening goal.

The team is partnering with the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre’s Empty Stocking Fund initiative, where all items will be donated to upon collection.

Marketing Manager for the North Stars, Jennifer Whyte said the team is more than happy to pitch in and help make a difference for those in need this year.

“The Empty Stocking Fund this time of year is looking for anyone and everyone to donate items that are useful to those in need, so this is just our way of giving back,” she said.

The following evening, Saturday night against the Weyburn Red Wings, fans are also encouraged to bring along non-perishable food items to be donated to the Food Bank.

Whyte added with several hundred people in the stands attending each game day, there is truly an opportunity to do something special together as a group.

“There are a lot of people in our community that are in need and we are in a position where we have 800, 900, maybe 1,000 fans coming for the games,” Whyte said. “If all of those people brought one can of food or one toque, that is potentially 1,000 people in this community who can eat and not be hungry this holiday season. I think we are in a position to do some good, so we are going to take advantage of that.”

Friday’s game against Estevan and Saturday’s game against Weyburn will each be broadcasted on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast.
